Typically, Cottages or vacation properties are listed on your home insurance policy as a "Secondary" or "Seasonal" location. The benefit of this is that you only pay one liability premium and are able to spread contents out between the two locations.
One area to pay attention to when insuring cottages or vacation properties, either on a stand alone basis or as a second location on your home insurance, is that more often than not the coverage on that location can be substantially different then on your principal residence.
Restriction on coverages by the insurance company is due to several reasons as often these types of properties are:
not hydrant protected
not within 8km of a firehall
not permanently occupied
not fire resistive construction
